D. O. C. – - MURFATLAR
All the grapes at Murfatlar are DOC, our vineyard of about 4000 hectares - enjoying a particularly favorable and unique micro-climate in Romania, giving
- to our winemakers the ability to produce a wide variety of wines. This
- flexibility is due to the continental climate, the diversity of planting
- locations, the protective effect of the hill against the predominant
- North-Eastern cold currents, and the favorable influence of the Black Sea,
- which tempers the excessive heat and frost. Most importantly, it is the
- proximity to the Black Sea that gives the vineyard the same climate conditions
- as other well known vineyards around the world, such as Bordeaux.
HISTORY - OF THE REGION:
Blessed with one of the most - desirable locations, Murfatlar is situated in south-eastern Romania, between
- the Danube and the Black Sea, in the center of the Dobrogea Plateau. The
- climate is temperate-continental. The average temperature is 11 degrees Celsius.
- The average rain fall is of 420 liters/sqm.
Historical documents mentioning Murfatlar vineyard are more than 1700 - years old. Written testimonies on wine
- growing in this región were given by the famous Latin poet Ovidiu (Publius
- Ovidiu Naso, 43 B.C.-17 A.D.) who lived in Tomis citadel on the Black Sea shore
- between 9 and 17 A.D.
The first modern plantations took place in 1954, under the communist - rule.
HISTORY - OF THE WINERY:
In September 2002 Murfatlar - became the first Romanian winery to receive ISO 9001:2001 certification for its
- quality management system and its HACCP system for food safety.
The modern society was - established in 1954. Today, Murfatlar
- Romania is a private company, owing the largest vineyard in Romania, about 4000
- hectares and is the most important investor in the wine industry in the region.
- From vine growing to cellars and bottling lines, each division underwent a
- process of modernization and installation of new technology that makes
- Murfatlar Romania the producer with the most advanced and up-to-date
- technological support on the Romanian market.
TYPE: White, aged in barrels for at least 12 years. The barrels are of max. 500 - liters capacity, 100% Romanian oak.
VARIETY: blend of Pinot Gris, - Chardonnay, Riesling, Muscat Ottonel
ORIGIN - OF THE GRAPES:
Vineyard: The total surface of the vineyard is of 4000 hectares, - while the surface of each lot is of about 2 hectares. The grapes are at about
- 0.7-0.8 meters above the ground, while the poles, made from steel or
- concrete, are of 1.6-1.7 meters height.
- The vines are sustained by wood, metal or bamboo supports. The soil
- is carbonated cernosium, while the subsoil is from loess to lime soil or
- skeleton type. The plants are grown to the south, the lines being oriented
- N-S and E-V. The density is of 3.700-4.500 vines per hectare. The vines are
- "Vitis Vinifera", grafted on specific top graft cuttings. The
- plantations from the last ten years are
- with varietals from certified quality clones. The production is between
- 7.5-12 tones/hectare. Viticulture practices are organic and biodynamic, not
- certified.
Date - of Harvest: From 10th
- September to 15th October. Since 2005, when the harvest was affected by heavy
- rains, the weather conditions have been very favorable for vine culture.
- Particularly during summer the rains were not excessive and almost stopped in
- early August, allowing the grapes to develop at their best potential for more
- than 1 month, until the beginning of the harvest. The harvest period, which at
- Murfatlar, due to the dimensions of the vineyard, lasts for more than 1 month,
- was also characterized by médium-high temperatures and seldom mild rains.
VINIFICATION: During harvest, small bins are used to transport the grapes on high - distances and bins from 2.5 to 4 tons to transport the grapes on short
- distances. The selection of the varietals is done in the vineyard, so that
- purity to be close to 100%. The grapes with mold are eliminated. Destemed
- with a rigorous selection of every grape. Cold pre-fermentative maceration.
FERMENTATION: Fermented at 14-16º C for a period of 10-20 days. MACERATION: On the skins for 1-2 days. MALOLACTIC FERMENTATION: in oak - barrels of 5000 liters.
AGEING: Barrel: 12 - years in Romanian oak barrels.
TASTING - NOTE:
A special, liquorous - wine, fortified with brandy spirit, produced according to traditional recipes
- inspired by the technology of the famous wines of Porto, Malaga, Madeira and
- Xeres. The tear of the poet symbolizes the emotion triggered when sipping this
- exceptional wine. The golden colour, the honey-like aroma and the sumptuous
- taste are due to aging up to 20 years in small oak barrels. Enjoy this wine as
- the poet himself would have enjoyed it.
